Teaching

I am an enthusiastic teacher, and I see teaching as a creative process, which reflects my own journey as a practising musician.

Along this journey there is joy and much beauty, but there may be difficulties and frustration at times.

This is where understanding the mechanics of playing correctly with the least amount of effort is so important. I have developed such understanding of technique in over 25 years of teaching guitar and lute. I have learnt a lot from my students.

I also enjoy teaching music theory as an integral part of the lessons.

This can be truly fascinating, and enhance the emotional experience of playing an instrument.

Generally, I see teaching and learning as the never ending process of bridging the gap between the inner musician and what one can do on the instrument.

I hope to post educational videos and articles on here very soon.

Testimonials

Ryan:

"Yair is my lute tutor, and has been for several years. I am aware he teaches classical guitar also. I cannot recommend Yair highly enough.
He is an outstanding tutor. His attention to detail is exceptional. I feel that my playing improves with every lesson through his expert advice and tuition. He tailors his lessons to my ability, delivering classes which are challenging without being intimidating. Additionally, his lessons are always fun. He is a phenomenal musician, so watching him play is inspiring, and he shares his wealth of knowledge about musical theory and history.
I have had lessons with Yair both in person and virtually. The virtual lessons are just as engaging and helpful as those in person, so if you are too far to visit him, do not let that put you off.
On top of it all, Yair is a genuinely great person, and it is a pleasure to learn from him.
I recommend Yair without hesitation!"

James:

"I was drawn to Yair because of his playing, which is as sensitive as it is masterful. After more than three years of lessons on the baroque lute I can say that this balance comes through also in his style of teaching, which is gentle and encouraging yet rich and precise. I came with no previous experience on stringed instruments, and through his help I can now enjoy playing a great variety of pieces from the likes of Weiss, Purcell, Kellner, Bach, and more. Yair is responsive and accommodating when arranging lesson times that suit my busy work schedule. It is always a pleasure to see him for a lesson in his leafy, quiet corner of London, and I recommend him to anyone."

Andrew:

"Yair is my tutor for Renaissance 7-course lute, and began lessons with him after he was recommended to me by another of his students. Yair is a highly accomplished musician and teacher. I would describe his approach as patient, unassuming, and deeply inspiring. He is not only helping me to learn to play the lute, but also to become more thoughtful about the process of learning an art well. I highly recommend lessons with Yair!"

Julie:

"I have been having guitar lessons with Yair for a few years now.

He is an excellent teacher - professional, talented, encouraging and very patient.

I highly recommend him. Julie in Highgate."

Thomas:

"Yair has been teaching me the lute for four years. He is an expert performer and takes his playing seriously, though there is much laughter during our sessions. Yair is constantly examining and refining his own playing and shares his analytical methods. His demonstrations are beautiful and inspiring. Strongly recommended!"
